Background
If the communication is in words and sentences it is a bodied or disembodied soul. If the communication is symbolic, or uses words as puns, or is simply a ‘thought’ without words – an impression conveyed, communication is with a Spirit being , Spirit helper or Intelligence.
The composer constructs the image, so who or what he is talking to, we will never know.

Wisdom, Madness and Folly - John Custance
…..the sense of communion extends to all mankind, dead, living and to be born. That is perhaps why mania always brings me an inner certainty that the dead are really alive and that I can commune with them at will. This seems to be quite common among manic-depressive patients; only the other day one said to me that he could converse with "any old spirit". I hold imaginary conversations-which appear absolutely real to me-with all my favourite historical characters, notably anima-figures (in Jung's sense) like Cleopatra and Mary Magdalene. These figures actually appear to me in visions, and so do my own ancestors, in whom I take far more interest when in the manic state than at any other time. Close relations and friends who have died seem of course particularly near.
