Background

A description of the experience

Warfarin

Warfarin is also known under the brand names Coumadin  , Jantoven, Marevan, Lawarin, Waran, and Warfant.  It  is an anticoagulant. Strictly speaking Warfarin is not a ‘blood thinner’, since it does not affect the thickness or viscosity of blood. Instead, it acts on the liver to decrease the quantity of a few key proteins in blood that allow blood to clot.

It was initially marketed as a pesticide against rats and mice and is still popular for this purpose. A few years after its introduction, warfarin was found to be effective for preventing thrombosis and embolism (abnormal formation and migration of blood clots). It was approved for use as a medication in the early 1950s and has remained in use ever since; warfarin is the most widely prescribed oral anticoagulant drug in North America.

Despite its effectiveness, treatment with warfarin has several shortcomings. Many commonly used medications interact with warfarin, as do some foods (particularly fresh plant-based foods containing vitamin K), and its activity has to be monitored by blood testing “to ensure an adequate yet safe dose is taken”. Clearly given the number of hallucinations this is either not always done or they get it wrong!

On Aug, 2, 2015: 47,495 people reported to have side effects when taking Warfarin sodium. Among them, 309 people (0.65%) have Hallucination.
