Hallucination

Background

At the time of writing 12 P2Y receptors seemed to be applicable to human beings.  Quite a number of ligands have been found for them, one of which is ADP.  ADP is stored inside blood platelets and is used to help blood platelets clump together – to clot, useful when you have cut yourself. As a sort of balancing principle, however, Adenosine acts as an agonist to stop the aggregation – stop clotting.  So here we have got to the functions:

  • Adenosine stops or slows down blood clotting – it keeps the blood ‘thin’ as opposed to thick
  • ADP helps blood platelets to aggregate together  - to form a clot, to thicken up.

All this happens at the P2Y12 receptor

A description of the experience

Clopidogrel

Clopidogrel  is a drug used to inhibit blood clots in coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, and cerebrovascular disease. It is marketed under the trade name Plavix [see separate entry].    It works by irreversibly inhibiting the  P2Y12 receptor.  It ‘thins the blood’.
