Advice to treat the voices as if they were real

Identifier

005037

Type of spiritual experience

Hallucination

Background

from the Hearing Voices Network

The following is exceptionally sound advice.  Most voices are indeed from bodied and occasionally disembodied souls.  The disembodied souls can be those having an out of body experience, as such you are meeting fellow spiritual travellers who may be good, bad or indifferent and who may either know what they are doing or be as surprised as you are and just as confused.

In cases of voices that communicate intelligibly using sentences, you need to treat the voice like a rather odd mobile phone call or the sorts of weird cold calls you get from India selling you legal advice for an accident you never had!

The binaural beats she speaks of are covered on this website under the headings of hemi-sync and listening to sound and music.  The Monroe Organisation which supplies these CDs is also described on this website

Hi Arctic,

I'm really sorry you are feeling so bad right now, I wish I could give a magic solution that will fix it all but I can't, the truth is it's gonna be tough.

Firstly I can only tell you what I do, whether it can help you I don't know.

You should treat the voices as if they are real, listen to what they say, then consider it rationally. Is it rational to hurt yourself or others? You should question the voices ask them, why, to what end, how will anyone profit?

Essentially you have to take charge and refuse to back down to your voices. In my experience the voices are not always wrong, they sometimes tell us things which we are too weak to face up to ourselves, but I can see no way in which the voices which tell you to hurt yourself can be right, there is no profit in self harm. If the voices tell you to hurt someone else perhaps they see that someone is hurting you, but you shouldn't hurt them, you should avoid them, again there is no profit in harming someone else, you will get locked up.

You say you have visual hallucinations too, perhaps your medication needs changing, I never heard or saw anything until my shrink put me on anti-psychotics.

Please don't just stop your meds, I did and had as many hallucinations as a side-effect of stopping as when I was on them.

If the music isn't helping you should perhaps try the binaural tones, I use the alphamind app on the iphone but I know there are tones on Youtube and you can get albums, it doesn't work for everyone but I find it works very well for me.

I have done all of the above but I still have negative voices, but now they are pure abuse and I can ignore them, whereas once I was tormented by their demands, but now they have none, because I have addressed their concerns and either dismissed them as irrational or adjusted my life to face up to the truths that they told me.

I know it is hard, that you feel hopeless right now, but please don't give up, take charge of your mind and push back.

Take care and good luck.

Lily
