Andy Clarke from Dukinfield on the western side of the Pennines contacted me via the science centre at Jodrell Bank to report the following event on 4th April 1986.
‘I was walking home from work when I heard a strange noise. It was something like a low-flying helicopter and came in waves. I could hear the distinctive whoomph-whoomph sound on my eardrums.'
Looking up, Andy was surprised not to be able to see the aircraft. But he did detect a fizzling or sizzling sensation in the air as if it were 'charged with electricity’. It was then that he spotted the blue/white globe of light with a fuzzy outline that was heading slowly towards him from Glossop.
Investigation by Georgina Mills failed to find any explanation for this phenomenon and whilst we did consider ball lightning - a rare form of atmospheric lightning – there were no obviously consistent weather conditions to point to this.
What we did find was that the area beneath where the blue light appeared was riddled with fault lines in the rock.
