The following amazing conversation took place on the ‘askmedicaldoctor’ website. The doctor is less than helpful, at no time does he suggest that in fact John may actually be in the process or about to have an out of body experience
He is not schizophrenic nor is he epileptic. But he does need to find out the cause
Incidentally, if he really is experiencing physical tremours then he may be on a fault line, in which case he is 'experiencing earth forces' and the hallucinations can be explained. But his family don't appear to be able to detect these, so there is the suspicion this is not the cause

I have been experiencing auditory hallucinations every so often for two years and last night it felt like there was an earthquake for 10 seconds but my family didn’t feel it of course. Could this be vertiginous epilepsy? Have you heard of this before?

Dear johndatcher, You need to go for a complete Psychiatric analysis for hallucinations. The most common reason for these are Schizophrenia. What other symptoms you suffer and the detailed history about yourself is very important. Take care!

I have never hallucinated voices, I thought that was schizophrenia. Specifically I hallucinate complex formed music, until recently I also felt a violent earthquake. I was hoping you could tell me anything about vertiginous epilepsy, it's difficult to find information on.

Vertiginous seizures or vertiginous epilepsy are a well recognized rare form of seizures in which episodic sudden attacks of a feeling of motion or spinning occur, and are usually localized to the surface of the temporal lobe of the brain, near the same part of the brain that processes hearing information. This may occur due to some tumor compressing on to the temporal lobe and you have to check with a neurologist and go for an MRI.
