Background
Those brought up in the Christian/Jewish/Islamic religions have a tendency to assume that this part in the Bhagavad Gita is about him talking to 'God' because their religion teaches that about the only thing in the spiritual world is this undefined thing called 'God' with perhaps a few angels here and there. But the Hindu religion and scriptures recognise a vast panoply of spiritual richness and Arjuna here is not talking to 'God' he is talking to a god, and that god is his Higher spirit - the god in him
'there lives a master in the hearts of men' [and women of course]
We are all puppets and controlled by our Higher spirits, and we have to trust that higher spirit for better or worse, 'Give Me thy heart. Adore Me. Serve Me', if we do we get help and guidance, and our Higher spirit loves us 'for thou art sweet to me'
There is also a description of the need to accept our destiny and the qualities - personality - we have been given to achieve that destiny and challenge.
Thy qualities would spur thee to war.
We are what we are, we have been made this way for a purpose, the key to life is to find the purpose, 'Know thyself'

From the Bhagavad Gita
And whatsoever deeds he doeth – fixed in me, as in his refuge –
He hath won for ever and for ever by My grace
The Eternal rest!
So win thou!
In my thoughts do all thou dost for Me!
In faith of Me
All dangers thou shalt vanquish, by My grace
But, trusting to thyself and heeding not thou can'st but perish
If this day thou sayest relying on thyself 'I will not fight'
Vain will the purpose prove.
Thy qualities would spur thee to war.
What thou dost shun, misled by fair illusions
Thou wouldst seek against thy will
When the task comes to thee,
Waking the promptings in thy nature set.
There lives a Master in the hearts of men
Who maketh their deeds,
By subtle pulling strings, dance to what tune He will
With all thy soul trust Him
And take Him for thy succour
So – only so Arjuna – shalt thou gain
By grace of Him – the uttermost repose
The Eternal Peace

Take my last word. My utmost meaning how
Precious thou art to Me; and well beloved
Listen! I tell thee for thy comfort, this
Give Me thy heart. Adore Me. Serve Me
Cling in faith and love and reverence to Me
So shalt thou come to Me
I promise true
For thou art sweet to Me
And let go those rites and writ duties
Fly to Me alone
Make Me thy single refuge
