Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

This woman was told that she had suffered a  ‘nasty concussion and a hematoma that was a third as big again as her head’ .  This was an epidural hematoma – one caused by bleeding from a ruptured artery lying between the lining of the brain and the skull.

A description of the experience

I was on my way to a dental appointment and I was rushing and it had been raining.  I was having to catch a bus and I crossed a pedestrian cross walk but it did not have traffic lights …. I was walking across and a man yelled at me and I wheeled around to see what he was saying – apparently he was trying to warn me – and I was struck from behind by a black car  … that’s the last thing I remember until I was above the whole scene viewing the accident.

I was very detached.  This was the amazing thing about it to me …. I don’t remember hearing anything.  I don’t remember anybody saying anything.  I was just viewing things.  It was just like I floated up there, up to the roof top or maybe a little higher, very detached.

I think the thing that impressed me the most was that I was devoid of emotion.  It was as though I was pure intellect.  I wasn’t frightened.  You know, it was very pleasant and obviously emotionally detached from the whole situation.  I remember seeing my shoe, which was crushed under the car.  I remember seeing the earring which was smashed.  I remember wearing a new dress and I was wearing it for the second time – at that time I made all my clothes – and I thought:  Oh no.  My new dress is ruined.  And I wasn’t even thinking about my body being possibly ruined too.  This is an odd thing in that I don’t think really that the seriousness of the situation dawned on me.  I don’t think I really had the realisation at the time that:  Oh my God, I’m outside my body.  What’s happening to me?

The next thing I saw was the woman [the driver of the car] crying.  She was standing by the car and the car was stopped right where everything had happened.  I remember seeing the car being dented.  And I saw my body.

My attention was called to my body when the attendants put it on the stretcher.  I saw myself in profile.  I was actually towards the front and side of the car, viewing all of this.  The ambulance was actually at the back of the car
