Symbols on reverse of Pictish Stone known as :Rodney"s Stone" Brodie, Moray , Scotland

The symbolism of the hare can be found by following the link below.

 Is the hare Capricorn?

This symbol has confused just about everyone - including us.  It appears that there are a number of things that are key in recognising this picture and one of the key aspects is to establish whether it has legs or a tail.  If it has a tail it is possibly a whale, if it has legs it is possibly a hare.  On the other hand the DIRECTION in which the symbol faces may also be key  - Cetus the whale faces left,  but this symbol faces right and is horizontal.

It looks, however, very like Capricorn, leaving us to speculate whether a hare got turned into a fish tailed goat by Ptolemy.

Capricornus is one of the constellations of the modern zodiac. Its name is Latin for "horned goat" or "goat horn" or "having horns like a goat's", and it is commonly represented in the form of a sea-goat: a mythical creature that is half goat, half fish. Its symbol is (Unicode ♑).

Capricornus is one of the 88 modern constellations, and was also one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy. Under its modern boundaries it is bordered by Aquila, Sagittarius, Microscopium, Piscis Austrinus, and Aquarius. The constellation is located in an area of sky called the Sea or the Water, consisting of many water-related constellations such as Aquarius, Pisces and Eridanus. It is the smallest constellation in the zodiac.

Capricornus is a faint constellation, with only one star above magnitude 3; its alpha star has a magnitude of only 3.6.  It is possible that it was not used as a sign of the zodiac in the Pictish system for this reason.
