PART II. THE EMOTIONS.
CHAPTER X. INFLUENCE OF THE EMOTIONS UPON THE ORGANIC OR VEGETATIVE FUNCTIONS.
In connection with the influence of the emotions …, its generally recognized effect in inducing cancer should be mentioned, a predisposition in the system being probably necessary.
Descuret reports the case of a young woman who had cancer of the breast requiring operation, which he attributes to the maleficent action of Jealousy, Hatred, and Chagrin (La Medecine des Passions. Par J. B. F. Descuret. 1841, p. 621).
Romberg says he attended a lady, set. 40, whose right mamma had four years previously, after violent mental excitement, become attacked with scirrhus, which was being gradually developed (A Manual of the Nervous Diseases of Man. By M. H. Romberg, M.D. Translated for the Sydendam Society by Dr. Sieveking. 2 vols. 1853, I, p. 150).
Bichat maintains that cancer of the stomach frequently owes its origin to powerful emotions — " l'impression vive ressentie au pylore dans les fortes emotions, l'empreinte ineffacable qu'il en conserve quelquefois " (Recherches Physiologiques sur la Vie et la Mort. Par M. F. X. Bichat. 1800. (Edited by Dr. Cerise. 1844.), p. 40).
