In the Villa of Mysteries in Pompei there is a fresco that shows either the technique of Looking at shiny objects   or Looking at a crystal ball, that may have been used as part of the Dionysian Mysteries.

In the background we see a mask.

The lad at the back is holding a shield.

The man holding the bowl is wearing a wreath.

The silver bowl is reflective like a mirror, so symbolically and literally the initiate is searching in the spiritual world for answers about his destiny, and  personality .
