PART II. THE EMOTIONS.
CHAPTER VIII. INFLUENCE OF THE EMOTIONS UPON THE VOLUNTARY MUSCLES.
SECTION III.— Loss of Muscular Power : Paralysis.
Mr. Fletcher records a case of aphonia in a gentleman, caused by indulgence in solitary Grief, Fear, and Remorse:
"There was no other symptom but that of aphonia about him, besides general languor and despondency. His voice had been gone for five weeks. I held a long cheering and soothing conversation with this very stout and healthy person, during which he became satisfied that there was no return of a complaint, the thoughts of which weighed heavily on his mind. He was directed to rise early, take the air, enter society, and drink a few glasses of wine after dinner. A week afterwards his voice had fully returned" (Sketches from the Case-Book to illustrate the Influence of the Mind on the Body. By R. Fletcher, M.B.C.S. 1833, p. 327).
