Another man who took psychic phenomena very seriously was W. T. Stead, who edited an English journal named Borderlands around the turn of the century.
In 1897 he published a palmist's prediction about himself: he would die at the age of sixty-three (in 1912). Stead once wrote a story about a shipwreck that claimed many lives because there were insufficient lifeboats. In the archives of the British SPR I discovered a letter that Stead had written in 1895 to one of the founding members, F. W. H. Myers.
The letter warned Myers of a premonition by one of Stead's relatives that the ship Myers was to take across the Atlantic, the Majestic, would meet with disaster. Myers ignored the warning and safely sailed to New York on the Majestic.
In 1911 Stead consulted the famous psychic Cheiro (Count Louis Hamon), who allayed Stead's fears that he would meet death at the hands of a mob one day. Cheiro checked out Stead's astrological horoscope and wrote him a letter saying that the only real danger to him could come in the middle of April 1912 if he were traveling by water. Another psychic sensitive whom Stead consulted told him of a troubling dream of bodies struggling in the water in some sort of sea catastrophe and related this dream somehow to Stead.
Meanwhile, the captain of the Majestic had been transferred to a new ship that was to make her maiden voyage across the Atlantic in April 1912. And so, disregarding three warnings, Stead was one of the more than 1500 passengers who perished because of insufficient lifeboats on the Titanic when it struck an iceberg on April 14.
How many of you would have signed up for a sea voyage in the face of a warning such as sent by Cheiro, as celebrated in his day as Jeane Dixon today:
"Very critical and dangerous for you should be April 1912, especially about the middle of that month. So don't travel by water then if you can help it. If you do, you will be liable to meet with such danger to your life that the very worst may happen. I know I am not wrong about this 'water' danger; I only hope I am, or at least that you won't be travelling somewhere about that period.”
