NOTES from Clara or On Nature’s Connection to the Spirit World – F W J Schelling
12. At the height of Mlle Clairon's fame, a certain Mr. S, who was spending his money in the hope of coming into higher social circles, entered into her circle of acquaintances. Mlle Clairon regarded him only as a friend, whereas he read more into the relationship.
On realizing that Mr. S wanted more than just friendship, Mlle Clairon arranged that he should see less of her to try and let him down gently. Disappointed, Mr. S became ill.
Mlle Clairon helped out with his medical costs but still refused to see him, as she regarded this the best course of action. Two and a half years after their first meeting, Mr. S asked Mlle Clairon to visit him once more, on his deathbed. She refused.
That very same evening at 11:00 p.m., which was the time that Mlle Clairon's acquaintances usually gathered at her place, a terrifying scream went through the room and was heard by all those present. This scream subsequently repeated itself on numerous occasions, always at the same time of night and always when Mlle. Clairon was present.
Even the police were witness to this event.
After some months the sound of the scream was replaced by the sound of gunfire, although no bullets could ever be found. She once felt a clip round her ear that accompanied the sound of the shot, and it always occurred at about 11:00 p.m.
The gunfire then itself eventually became replaced by the sound of hands applauding and then fading into melodic sounds. After two and a half years-the same length of rime as the duration of her friendship with Mr. S-the strange occurrences ceased. Some time afterward she happened to meet the servant who had been with Mr. S when he died. The servant related that when Mlle Clairon had refused to see Mr. S on his deathbed, Mr. S had exclaimed,
"She won't gain anything by that, I will pursue her after my death for as long as I have pursued her in life!"
He had died shortly after 10.30 p.m.
