Background

The Telegraph - Supernatural superstar; Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour has returned to his roots and rediscovered the spirit he lost in Western music - Mark Hudson 12:01AM GMT 12 Dec 2002

There's a barely controlled hysteria as N'Dour's voice builds from a rich, intimate croon to the glittering, ecstatic heights that make his one of the world's few truly unmistakable voices. ….

The young audience is a broad cross-section of multi-ethnic France. Many are of Senegalese origin, but 43-year-old N'Dour must be approaching their father's age. Indeed, by any conventional logic, N'Dour should have been on the way out years ago. Touted since the mid-1980s as the man who would do for African music what Bob Marley did for reggae, he has twice been dropped by major Western labels.

But N'Dour has a way of bouncing back, and now he has produced what many regard as his best album yet - Nothing's in Vain - and, as he tells me before the concert, he's only beginning to fulfil his musical dreams.

"I feel free. I've got the confidence at last to make the music I want to make. There's a new spirit in African music - as though we've started all over again!"
