A description of the experience
Edvard Grieg Ballade in the Form of Variations on a Norwegian Folk Song, Op 24 Arthur Rubinstein
Both Alexander and Gesine Grieg died in 1875. The loss of his mother and father led Grieg to wonder where he could turn for reassurance.
He channeled his grief into the composition of his most ambitious piano piece, the Ballade in the Form of Variations on a Norwegian Folk-Tune, op. 24, written "with my life's blood in days of sorrow and despair."
