Mr Nestledraught, the night guard’s companion, seemed to appear, very small indeed, and almost too hot to touch, from a corner of the padded cell, and to increase in size till he was three or four feet high, then to march off with a deedy, self important air. He seemed actually to be Pontius Pilate, released from Hell; his Roman nose and his dull complexion lent colour to this suggestion
