Background

According to Dr Duke Qunine is :

QUININE : Abortifacient; Allergenic; Amebicide IC50=14.8 ug/ml; Analgesic; Anesthetic; Antibacterial; Antidysenteric; Antifeedant; Antifibrillary; Antihemorrhoidal; Antilumbagic; Antimalarial IC50=0.18 ug/ml; Antineuralgic; Antineuritic; Antipyretic; Antisciatic; Antitrypanosomic; Antiyeast; Apertif; Astringent; Cardiodepressant; Cytotoxic IC50=183 ug/ml; Dermatitigenic; FLavor FEMA 5-83 (-100); MDR-Inhibitor IC50=4-17 uM; Oxytocic; Pesticide; Phototoxic; Protisticide; Spermicide; Stomachic; Trypanocide

We are unable to work out why the resultant drug is thus the subject of abuse unless it is its anaesthetic effects and antineuralgic effects.  Taken as a pill, there is a high likelihood of overdose

It is known that codeine and quinine inter-act and have an hallucinogenic effect

A description of the experience

Qunine is one of the active ingredients in cinchona bark, but not the only one.  Good tonic water, for example, is made from the bark as a whole, whereas the medication sold by pharmaceutial companies is just the chemical.

Quinine as a medication/pharmaceutical is used to treat malaria and babesiosis. This includes the treatment of malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum that is resistant to chloroquine when artesunate is not available.

In the United States, quinine sulfate is commercially available in 324-mg tablets under the brand name Qualaquin. All quinine salts may be given orally.

It has also been used 'off label' for restless legs syndrome, "it is not recommended for this purpose due to the risk of side effects". It can be taken by mouth or used intravenously.

Common side effects of quinine as a pharmaceutical according to Wikipedia  include headache, ringing in the ears, trouble seeing, and sweating. More severe side effects include deafness, low blood platelets, and an irregular heartbeat. Use can make one more prone to sunburn. "While it is unclear if use during pregnancy causes harm to the baby, use to treat malaria during pregnancy is still recommended. How it works is not entirely clear."[sic]
