My Crowded Sanctuary – Clare Sheridan
My own interpretation of the MYSTERUM TREMENDUM is best set out in the form of a diagram. A series of circles register vibrations.
On the outer circle there is unrest, hate, violence, disruption, ugliness, cruelty, chaos, and pain. As you penetrate towards the centre the circles register in turn spiritual consciousness, inner serenity, beauty, harmony, until close to the central spirit you find peace. If on the outer circle of chaos one is able to help, then help one must; but if--as is the case for a great many at the present time--one is impotent, if the clamour and the dust are too loud and too thick, then it is useless to stand idly around to be choked and buffeted. Better far to retire from the fray, to retreat inwards towards the centre, and there await in patient serenity the appropriate moment to intervene.
This is neither egoism nor resignation, it is an opportunity for vitalizing and strengthening the spirit for ultimate action. In a little anonymous book which gives me a daily inspired message I find the following:
'When you are conscious that there is a world of harmony and beauty just behind the veil of your limited consciousness, you will find that it is quite possible to live in this inner world of harmony even while moving through chaos.
'Seek this world in the still place within you,'
