A few years ago Mrs. Shearer's mother was seriously ill in hospital. Her daughter with her grandchildren were down on holiday in Port Elizabeth. The serious illness of their “greatgrannie" was not told them and the impression was created that she would get well and come home after the operation. There was always a member of the family with her during the later period when she became comatosed. Anyway the grandchildren knew none of this.
Then one afternoon the little grandson aged five was playing outside the kitchen door in the back garden. Mrs. Shearer, his mother, a Miss Pretorius and a coloured servant were all in the kitchen when he came in hurriedly from his game, as if he had been interrupted in his play. As he came in he said to them – “I have just seen 'greatgrannie' going up, up there in the sky. She was going to heaven."
They were amazed and Mrs. Shearer questioned him about her appearance, dress and so on, and he answered most unconcernedly as if he were describing an everyday occurrence, "Oh she was dressed in white and she was going up and up over there," pointing to the sky and then he went out to continue his game.
Within moments of this conversation, in fact they were still looking at each other in astonishment, the 'phone rang and her brother told her that their mother had died a few minutes before.
