Rosalind Heywood – The Infinite Hive
We were living in a romantic but chilly converted barn in a Sussex village and my husband, having just been appointed Military Attache in Turkey was going regularly to London for Turkish lessons. One cold winter's day he said to a casual acquaintance in London that he could not get his feet warm. 'Oh, yes, you can,' said the man, 'Just concentrate on the idea that they are warm and they will become so.'
My husband was amused, but he will always try anything once and during the afternoon he concentrated diligently. It was to no avail. His feet remained as cold as ever.
Those were the days before the blessed invention of fur-lined boots for women, and my feet used to feel like twin icicles when I took my small boy for walks on the freezing cliffs. But not so that afternoon. For no apparent reason they burnt like furnaces, and it was not until I heard my husband's joke about his abortive effort to warm his own feet that I wondered if he had succeeded with mine instead. (I always wish I knew whether mine really became hot or whether I only thought they did.)
