IN 1959 My husband engaged a new secretary, a brisk and sensible girl. One morning soon afterwards when busy typing, I felt an urge to run upstairs and speak to him, although I had no reason to do so and I wanted to get on with my work. As I walked into his study I heard him say to the secretary, 'I told you so.'
