Background

A description of the experience

Rosalind Heywood – The Infinite Hive

In 1928, after nursing my outsize baby for nearly three months I began to suffer a most distressing combination of nausea and extreme hunger, which made no sense at all for I was perfectly well. My doctor failed to help, I got worse and worse, and at last, exasperated, I sat down quietly to think the thing out for myself.

Then I observed that an image of the chalk track, which used to run on to the downs from the village of Rottingdean, was hanging before my inner eye, and I realized that it had been on the fringe of my consciousness for a day or two, but I had ignored it.

Now I asked myself, 'Why do I see that track when the part of Rottingdean I loved ran from the duckpond down to the sea?'

At that, inside my mind I heard just one word: 'Calcium.' Calcium!

The track was chalk. And my baby's bones were enormous.

I got a preparation of calcium from my doctor and the symptoms vanished at once.

It was obvious that this sudden cure might be due to autosuggestion, but recently a biologist told me that combined hunger and nausea had been recognized by Mellanby in 1938 as symptoms of calcium shortage. That was ten years after my mental image of the chalk track which saved the situation for me.
