A description of the experience

Lungwort - The Healing power of herbs – Ceres Esplan

Lungwort (pulmonaria officinalis), Jerusalem Cowslip, Soldiers and sailors, Joseph and Mary.

This flower is occasionally found growing wild but it is a common garden plant.  It flowers very early in the year, its flowers starting as a dull salmon pink and changing as they age to blue.  This of course, is the reason for some of its double country names.

Judging by the number of popular, traditional names, this must always have been a popular herb.  It was said to be good for lungs and to be ‘signed’ to that effect.

It is mucilaginous and a tea made from the leaves – 1oz (25 gms) to 1 pint (575 ml) of boiling water – is often helpful to sufferers of persistent coughs.

The young leaves, chopped in salads, make a pleasing addition when green stuff is scarce.
