A description of the experience

Hydroxyzine -  sold as Vistaril , Equipose, Masmoran, and Paxistil , Atarax , Alamon, Aterax, Durrax, Tran-Q, Orgatrax, Quiess, and Tranquizine.  It  is a ‘first-generation’ antihistamine of the diphenylmethane and piperazine classes. It was first synthesized in 1956 and is still in widespread use today.

On Jan, 19, 2017 1,462 people reported to have side effects when taking Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride.  Among them, 8 people (0.55%) have Hallucination

On Dec, 28, 2016 1,263 people reported to have side effects when taking Hydroxyzine Pamoate.  Among them, 6 people (0.48%) have Hallucination

On Jan, 05, 2017 13,477 people reported to have side effects when taking Hydroxyzine.  Among them, 128 people (0.95%) have Hallucination

On Dec, 24, 2016 5,436 people reported to have side effects when taking Vistaril.  Among them, 111 people (2.04%) have Hallucination

On Jan, 19, 2017 14,157 people reported to have side effects when taking Atarax.  Among them, 109 people (0.77%) have Hallucination

On Dec, 29, 2016 14,157 people reported to have side effects when taking Atarax.  Among them, 37 people (0.26%) have Hallucination, Auditory

Background

Hydroxyzine's predominant mechanism of action is as a potent H1 receptor inverse agonist .    In addition to its antihistamine activity, hydroxyzine has also been shown to act as a 5-HT2A, D2 and ?1-adrenergic receptor antagonist .  It may act on the 5-HT2C receptor as well.

It is used primarily as an antihistamine for the treatment of itching and  allergies.  It is thus used for the treatment of allergic conditions, such as chronic urticaria, atopic or contact dermatoses, and histamine-mediated pruritus. Hydroxyzine preparations usually require a doctor's prescription.

But it  is also classified as ‘anti-anxiolytic’ and it is a sedative, hypnotic, analgesic, and tranquilizer.  In this capacity it has been used for hyperalgesia, motion sickness-induced nausea, and insomnia, as well as the treatment of mild anxiety.   It is also  used with opioid analgesics to increase the pain-killing ability of a given dose of opioid, and/or preempt some side effects of opioids like itching, nausea, and vomiting.

It has been used  as a form of non-barbiturate tranquilizer used in the pre-operative sedation and treatment of neurological disorders, such as psychoneurosis and other forms of anxiety or tension states.  For dentistry and obstetrics as well as other surgeries and procedures and acute pain situations like accidents, hydroxyzine has been used as a “first line anxiolytic and opioid adjunct” because it lacks both antagonism and synergy with benzodiazepines and scopolamine, allowing either of these agents to be used simultaneously or later in the procedure if need be.    Side effects include:

  • tardive dyskinesia - after longer term use
  • deep sleep
  • incoordination and dizziness
  • hypotension
  • tinnitus
  • headaches
  • Gastro-intestinal effects
  • dryness of the mouth
  • constipation

Central nervous system problems such as hallucinations are attributed by the medical profession mostly to overdosage.  The pharmaceutical industry appear to believe that Vistaril is not used for ‘recreational purposes’, however, they are very wrong………
