Persepolis - And its sacred geography 02 Surroundings and cosmic egg

Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

The Dorodzan Dam has completely altered the way the rivers and streams now run, although the approximate course of most of the rivers that were once near the site can be seen.  Persepolis appears as though it would have been far more of a ‘water site’, almost like a vast mountainous island surrounded by water and connected by an isthmus.   From the point of view of a sacred geography this makes the mountain potentially more sacred than the newer temple site.

Another intriguing aspect is the presence of man made hills surrounding the site.  There are a number of mounds, largely ignored and partly destroyed that are satellites of the Persepolis mountain – leading one to suspect that this area was a giant reconstruction of the Cosmic Egg, with each man made mound a symbolic planet and this site the centre – the holy of holies.
