T C Lethbridge – A Step in the Dark
People as a whole do not realize to what extent many of the learned men they listen to on the wireless, or see on television, are parrots. A very large proportion of them are only the parrots with the best memories. What was taught by Professor X, two or even three generations ago, has still to be served up to get the best marks in an examination. The whole system of promotion, and by that of bread and butter, depends on being a good parrot............
You may think that I am being biased and unfair to scientists. Not at all. I was trained as one myself. But in 1937, on an expedition, which had passed up the coast of West Greenland and was within a few hundred miles of the North Pole, those of us who had been trained in disciplines other than those of the atom splitters and cosmic-ray catchers, whom we had on board, decided that if anything went wrong and we had to winter short of food in high latitudes, we would eat the atom-splitters first because they were so lacking in general knowledge as to be scarcely human.
