Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

Prehistoric Britain – Dr Christopher and Jacquetta Hawkes

Like the Cotswold chambered barrows, the covering mound was usually long in shape, and the centre of interest tended to be focused on a portal,-which in the most elaborate examples was formed by two large uprights set at the centre of a semi-circular façade recessed in one end of the cairn. This forecourt, a more ornate version of the splayed entrance of the Cotswold chambered barrows, must have been planned for use, and it is not too fanciful to see it filled by a circle of dancers moving in some revolving figure, while offerings might be made at the portal to propitiate the ancestral spirits………….

There remains a small megalithic group, of which Kit's Coty House is, by reason of its attractive name, the most familiar, isolated far from the main western centres of the Highland Zone, in the Medway valley of Kent. These tombs had small, box-like chambers in long mounds enclosed by rectangular palings of upright stones, and are interesting because they were never directly connected with the main stream of the megalithic movement round the Atlantic and Irish Sea coasts, but were inspired by immigrants from across the North sea, from the Low countries and north west Germany.

A description of the experience

from The World Guide to Gnomes, Fairies, Elves and Other Little People compiled by Thomas Keightley]

The Girl at the Troll Dance

A girl belonging to a village in the island of Funen, went out one evening into the fields, and as she was passing by a small hill she saw that it was raised upon red pillars and a Troll banquet going on beneath it.  She was invited in and such was the gaiety and festivity that prevailed, that she never perceived the flight of time.  At length, however, she took her departure after having spent, as she thought, a few hours among the joyous hill people.  But when she came to the village, she no longer found it the place she had left.  All was changed; and when she entered the house in which she had lived with her family, she learned that her father and  mother had long been dead and the house had come into the hands of strangers. She now perceived that for every hour she had spent amongst the Trolls a year had elapsed in the external world.  The effect on he mind was such that she lost her reason, which she never after recovered.
