Zoologists identify three biogeographical realms.
The Neogaean Realm includes Central and South America. Since the Neogaean was an island continent for millions of years, the fauna there are quite distinct. They would be even more so had the space between North and South America not been bridged by the isthmus of Panama some three or 3.5 million years ago. …. many South American animal species became extinct due to incursions by North American predators and competitors.
Among the South American species that did not experience extinction were the Platirrhini, or New World monkeys. No one knows how they arrived in the hemisphere in the first place.
