Background
A description of the experience
POEMS OF SURDAS translated by Professor John Stratton Hawley
Those Mathura people, they're rife with vice,
My friend: they've taken our beautiful Syam
and the fine technique they've taught him!
Udho, they say, has arrived in our midst
to peddle his yoga to poor young maidens;
His postures, dispassion, his eyes turned within-
friend, how can they shorten our distance from Syam?
Of course, we're just herders, so how should we know
the pleasures of mating with a hunchback girl?
But what kind of doctor, says Sur, can this be
who hands out prescriptions
when he doesn't know the disease?
