My husband has just told me, once more, that he lost his grandfather when he was about 8 years old, and that the old man had been found one morning, on the floor of his room, lifeless.
For three days previously he had lain in bed.
One night, when my father-in-law was staying with the patient, my mother-in-law was taking a little rest in her room, with her two children, who were asleep.
Suddenly my future husband sat up in bed and cried out to his mother:
‘Mamma, Mamma, what are you doing? Are you asleep? But grandfather is dead!’
My mother-in-law, rather affected, told her little boy to be quiet; he lay down again and was quiet at once; he had not even awakened.
At 4 o’clock in the morning my father-in-law went back to his room and said to his wife: ‘My poor dear, it is all over. Your father is dead’.
My husband had no memory of it on awakening in the morning. My husband is now 49.
