Background

A description of the experience

Carisoprodol  is a centrally-acting skeletal muscle relaxant. It is marketed in the USA under the brand name Soma , and in the United Kingdom and other countries under the brand names Sanoma and Carisoma.  In some countries, carisoprodol has been taken off the market due to problems with dependence and side effects.  Abusers of carisoprodol usually seek its potentially heavy sedating, relaxant, and anxiolytic effects. Also, because of its potentiating effects on narcotics, it is often abused in conjunction with many opioid drugs.

Tolerance can form very rapidly. This causes the abuser to continually increase dosage to obtain the desired effects. Soma (carisoprodol) is a muscle relaxant that is theoretically available by prescription only, but I have included an observation from an abuser of the drug to show just how easy it is to get it off prescription. Carisoprodol is actually a commonly abused medication.

The metabolism of carisoprodol may affect the abuse potential. The liver metabolizes carisoprodol into meprobamate. Meprobamate has significant anti-anxiety properties and is a controlled substance with the potential to be abused. Theoretically, it is possible that people whose livers are more efficient at metabolizing carisoprodol into meprobamate may be more likely to abuse carisoprodol.

On Jan, 17, 2017 2,370 people reported to have side effects when taking Carisoprodol.  Among them, 18 people (0.76%) have Hallucination
