Background

A description of the experience

Ciclosporin (INN/BAN) cyclosporine (USAN); cyclosporin (former BAN); or ciclosporin A, cyclosporine A, or cyclosporin A (often shortened to CsA) is an immunosuppressant drug widely used in organ transplantation to prevent rejection. It reduces the activity of the immune system by interfering with the activity and growth of T cells.   It was initially isolated from the fungus Tolypocladium inflatum (Beauveria nivea), found in a soil sample obtained in 1969 from Hardangervidda, Norway, by Hans Peter Frey, a Sandoz biologist.

Generic ciclosporin preparations have been marketed under various trade names, including Cicloral and Deximune.

Since 2002, a topical emulsion of ciclosporin for treating inflammation caused by keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye syndrome) has been marketed under the trade name Restasis (0.05%).

Conjunctivitis, is inflammation of the conjunctiva (the outermost layer of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids). It is commonly due to an infection  - usually viral, but sometimes bacterial or an allergic reaction.  In contrast, keratoconjunctivitis can be caused by:

  • Aging
  • Numerous classes of medications (both prescription and OTC) especially cholinergic medications that also cause dry mouth
  • Adenoviruses.
  • Diabetes
  • Contact lenses  - both soft and hard contact lenses.  Contact usage damages corneal nerve sensitivity, which subsequently may lead to decreased lacrimal gland tear production and dry eye.
  • LASIK and other refractive surgeries, in which the corneal nerves are cut during the creation of a corneal flap.
  • An eye injury or other problem with the eyes or eyelids,
  • Abnormalities of the lipid tear layer caused by blepharitis and rosacea
  • Vitamin A deficiency,
