A description of the experience

The Beyond within, the LSD story – Dr Sidney Cohen

Anxiety and panic states were noted, particularly during the struggle to maintain control of the situation.  Occasionally a patient became frightened toward the end of a session because of his/her distorted time perception; imagined that he had been in the state so long that he would never get back

'How long will this last?  Will this go on all the time?  I don't like this.  I want out!'

The fear was overwhelming me as I was thrust down into blackness.  My body was burning up and I began to sweat...

The indescribable feeling of being swirled and thrust into some place else was easing somewhat.  It seemed that I had been in this torment for weeks.  After it had eased up, I knew beyond a doubt that I was in another world.  I felt it was no use telling the psychologist about it because he wouldn't understand.  I remember thinking.

'This is what the psychotic feels like'

That feeling of panic and terror had left me tremulous and weak.  My clothes and body were saturated with perspiration.  I crawled up on the bed to rest....
