Henri Bergson – Matter and Memory
Following to the end this fundamental distinction, we are confronted by two different memories theoretically independent.
The first records, in the form of memory images, all the events of our daily life as they occur in time; it neglects no detail, it leaves to each fact, to each gesture, its place and date. Regardless of utility or of practical application, it stores up the past by the mere necessity of its own nature.
By this memory is made possible the intelligent, or rather intellectual recognition of a perception already experienced; in it we take refuge every time that, in the search for a particular image, we remount the slope of the past.
