Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
A description of the experience
Canto XII
While we were turning our bodies there
Voices were singing 'Beati pauperes spiritu'
And no words can tell how sweetly they sang
Ah how different these approaches are
From those of hell! For here we have songs
As we go in, and there ferocious laments
Canto XIII
We were at the top of the flight of stairs
Where, for a time, the mountain which
Purifies as one climbs it, is cut back
There a cornice makes a belt round the hill
In the same manner as the first one did
Except that the curve of it bends more sharply
