Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

Some people believe that past lives do affect us sub-consciously and others do not.

I have accessed what I believe might have been past lives – little clips of cine film that showed what I might have been, but there again I have no way of verifying that it was a past life, it could have been a vision - it was certainly not imagination, however, as it came as a bit of a surprise.

Many psychiatrists believe our subconscious is just inventing scenarios for parts of our own persona.  I will admit I do not hold with this simply because of my own experiences, but every opinion counts, so here is the opinion of another - the writer of the following is a psychiatrist……….

A description of the experience

Eusevgny Faygdish – Mystic Cosmos  [edited slightly to improve English]

It is important to understand that work with karmic problems does not necessarily require past lives.

For example modern psychotherapeutic methods interpret karmic memories as projections of our problems displaced into the subconscious. In other words the concept of karma works as a kind of screen through which we keep in touch with our unconsciousness.

Eastern tradition strongly connects the concept of karma with the concept of reincarnations and a sequence of incarnations from one life into another. The analysis of one's memories of past lives and one's acts there often helps to find the source of our present problems. However, even in India and Tibet such memories are treated rather as a metaphor, the way in which our subconscious tries to show us the reason for our failures.

Both Hinduism and Buddhism claim that our karmic past is thoroughly hidden to prevent the old attachments and emotions from slowing down our development and driving our attention away from our present life problems. Imagine what a hell our life would be if all we had once experienced would suddenly enter our mind.

................................................................

artificial revival of past lives memories, digging in their details is not used in ancient traditions. Even enlightened beings, Tibetan Lamas, acknowledged as reincarnations (tulku) do not try to remember their previous lives without real necessity.

....................................................

From this point of view many modern methods of work with karmic problems have been criticised. When people are put into altered states and made to experience previous lives, going through their details looking for the primary reasons for their failures, not only are the old problems not solved but new ones appear.
